Well, for those of you who don't know, my mama recently went to work for Kohler. As part of her orientation they toured some 'sample' bathrooms put together by guest designers, and knowing me like only she could, my mama had to tell me about the shell pink bath tub in 'The Shell Collector's Bathroom'. I love, love, LOVE it! The same tub also comes in a lovely frost color (pictured at lower right). It reminds me of earlier pink tubs (like the 1959 version illustrated at top right), but with a more refined shape. I would just live in a whole pink house if I didn't think it might deter visitors ;)

The Great Tree Topper Story

Well, as you know from my earlier posts, I purchased a new tree this year.

And while I love my little aluminum tree, somethings from my last tree just didn't translate well.

Most obviously- the tree topper. Last year I found this amazing retro tree topper at the dollar store, but the branches on my new tree are much thinner and this topper just flopped around pitifully.

My next thought was to make a paper version of the pink peacock my mom has on top of her tree (see top picture), and although I think the end result is pretty cute- it totally overwhelmed my tree.

So now, even though I'm usually anti-bows-on-trees, I think I have settled on this fuschia tulle bow, any thoughts?

I'm a bit obsessed with making Strattas right now. If you aren't familiar with this type of dish- it's kind of a mix between a baked omelet and savory french toast, it's completely delicious. You can add whatever you want to the standard egg/bread mixture, this one had cheddar, mozzarella, sausage, and turkey bacon- MMMMMM.

This past week was pretty rough. So what did I do as soon as I got home Friday evening? Set to work baking some pumpkin bread and muffins, that's what. My oven is on the fritz so this was more work than it ever would normally be. But still, it was nice to take some of these goodies with me as I headed up to Pennsylvania for the weekend!

Apple Peach Pie

This pie was so incredibly delicious it all got eaten up before I thought to take pictures!

But trust me, it was really amazing. Two peaches and three or four apples, yum.

I think the trick was that I carmelized the fruit in a saucepan with cinnamon, brown sugar, and butter before putting it in the crust and baking it.

I made this using the same technique I used to make all of those books last summer, but I got to thinking that if you just glued in some binder rings these would make super cute binders! It would also be pretty easy to add pockets, and then voila! Handmade custom organizational tools!

Blackberry Pie

Let me just start off by saying that Blackberry Pie is basically God's gift to Earth, sorry Jesus.

This pie just outranked Apple and Pumpkin as my new favorite.

I would post a recipe, but as any good pie maker knows, it's really all about intuition. I didn't use a recipe, I just got some fresh blackberries and figured the rest out as I went.

This pie was delicious by itself and I'm sure it would be even better with ice cream, but sadly I chose to make this the day I left town, so I never got the full experience.

Last Thursday my mom and I were frantically trying to find me some furniture and get it moved into my new apartment before Hurricane Irene got to Baltimore. Unfortunately for us all of the Salvation Army stores in the greater Baltimore area decided to close for weather. Alas, my mother had the brilliant idea to make the (relatively) short drive to Pennsylvania and scour their stores!

Turns out Pennsylvania is a thrift store goldmine, also super pretty. Here are a few pictures from the trip.

Here it is! Finally! The finished product- my new Baltimore abode.

The only new things in the room were my bed, curtains, and a portable closet thing from Walmart.

Everything else is thrifted including my desk, wardrobe, and headboard/magazine rack (all of which were repainted), and my bench and the old school desk that serves as my nightstand.

I especially love the vintage chandeliers, the old tin ceiling tile doubling as magnet board, the vintage post cards in the 'fireplace', and all the vintage suitcases used for storage. I am so happy to be living here!

They had these little paper-mache animals on sale at Michael's the other day for a dollar.

My mom picked up a lion and a giraffe, but I opted for this adorable little frog. I knew he'd be cute if I just glittered him up and gave him a crown- I was right!

Family Photo Project

This was just a little bitty project but I thought I'd share.

I love these old family photos and would love to take them back to Baltimore with me, but I would hate it if anything happened to them. So, in order to preserve the originals I made photo-copies.

Then I hit up the Goodwill and got these nice old gold colored frames (which are going to be SO CUTE in my thrifty new room, can't wait!). The photos looked nice in the frames but plain black backdrops just seemed a little too harsh, so instead I just cut some patterned craft paper to size. Just that little bit of color makes a huge difference. More home decor crafts (as well as a variety of other things) coming up later this week!

Over the past several months my mom has become involved with the Brave Girls Club. If you haven't heard of the BGC before here's how the founders describe it (from their website):

Brave Girls Club is an online community, a portal for amazing connections, a news source for everyday heroes, a resource for great ideas, amazing endeavors, everyday problem solving, realistic recipes and unforgettable get-togethers. Brave Girls Club is a place to feel free, to feel peace, and to feel brave. Brave Girls Club is not an exclusive club…every woman is invited. Brave Girls Club is life-changing fun, life-changing truths, and life-changing friendships.

My mom has been to their retreats as both a camper and as staff, and in June we worked on their online class Soul Restoration I together (along with a bunch of other lovely ladies in our lives). Some of the curriculum seemed a little cheesey to me, but there's a lot of good stuff, and, if nothing else, BGC is a great way for everyday people to be creative and just start making things. It was fun.
These truth cards are a part of Soul Restoration I. They are supposed to remind you of the truth, whether that truth is beautiful and uplifting or just hard to hear. The only requirement is that you include the "Dear Your Name" part, or else it's just not personal enough. I made way too many of these (35) so here are just my favorites, more after the jump..

Grandma's French Toast

Ok, this isn't French Toast made by my grandma (or anyone else's really). The reason I've decided to give it such a misleading name is because this amazing French Toast is made with cinnamon raisin bread that was completely homemade by one of my dear friend's grandmas. The rest of the ingredients are pretty basic (same eggs, sugar, milk, and vanilla as any other recipe) but this is truly the best French Toast I've ever eaten, and without a doubt one of the most delicious breakfast foods I've ever made.

Moral of the story- if any one offers you homemade bread forget about the carbs, grab as many loaves as you can hold, and run. So delicious.

So, I am FINALLY back to the blog! I hope I still have some readers left.

I've actually been uber crafty/productive this summer, so I have a lot to share.

I decided I'd start back off with the extremely festive dessert spread I put together for the 4th.

Pictured are some Blue Velvet cupcakes (with blueberries in the bottom and cream cheese frosting),

and a made from scratch strawberry cake with fresh strawberries in the middle and vanilla buttercream frosting, yummy.

I'm also a big fan of the little flags I made for the cupcakes which picture various founding fathers.

Beginning Easter

Spring Quilt

I'm in love with this. I decided that the quilt I made in June was a little too vibrant for any part of the year other than summer. Also- I think I made this quilt in record time, from beginning to cut out the squares to the last stitch it took about a week. Oops. I just got real excited.

I still haven't quite mastered the precision aspect of quilting (several of my squares do not line up),

but for whatever reason that just doesn't bother me. Besides, this quilt goes so nicely with that square of Blushing Princess ;)

Valentine Decorating

I realize it's only 2:30, but today has been such a good day!

I got up this morning and went to mass, and I'm so proud of myself. I also am in the process of making some vegetable soup and corn bread from scratch, AND, as you can see above, my roommates and I painted the homosote boards in our living room (they're still drying, so forgive the splotchiness). The color is Martha Stewart Living's 'Hummingbird Blue'. We all love, love, love it :)

Soon I'll be adding a swatch of pale ballerina pink to my room, can't wait to share!

So, today is my first full day back at MICA, and I've already kind of screwed up on my New Year's resolution. I think this is mostly because I have absolutely no groceries in the dorm yet, but it could also just be because I really like pizza and omelets. This is how I closed 2010 and opened up 2011. This past year was pretty good, had some hard times but also passed some HUGE milestones. I'm sort of anti-resolution, but these are my goals for 2011

1. Get hot (aka diet/gym)

2. Go to church (no, seriously...like on Sundays)

3. Make another quilt

That's it, you may have been expecting more, but those first two are whoppers. I also want to stop neglecting this blog. I don't have as much time to craft, so who knows what I'll be talking about. 2011 is going to be very interesting ;)

Loved loved loved all of the festivity this year! Way to go!

Among my favorite things were- candy cane striped trees, pink deer, and (of course) those light up orbs that hang from tree branches. Things I do not like one bit- those new-fangled LED lights that look purplish just like the LED car lights. I am so not a fan.

P.S. This year my mom and I continued the tradition of leaving anonymous thank you notes in the mailboxes of the houses who's lights we like the best :)

I LOVE MY TREE

It's pretty and quirky and heart-warming, I just love love love it.

I've had my own little Christmas tree as long as I can remember, but over the years it's grown from a little baby tree to the six foot tree I have now. Every year I get a few ornaments as presents from my mom, and by now I have quite the collection going- I included pictures of some of my favorites. The tree topper is a new edition this year- it's from the Dollar Store if you can believe it! Also- don't the presents look gorgeous under the tree?

Straw: A Collaboration

Last weekend I asked my dear friend, Kelsey McKinney, to write me a little something that I could base some art off of. Like a true sport- she responded with a three page short story title The Straw.

So here is my response. I wanted to distill the story down to pure color, but these colors are each created by 'cross hatching' several colors on top of each other with paint and a rag. Sorry these reproductions suck. You really have to see these in person.
